Since TikTok was banned by the Indian government, the video-sharing platform has consistently made headlines due to developments that followed the ban. Now, it appears that BytedDance, TikTok’s parent company, is in talks with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) to gain support for its business in India.
According to a TechCrunch report, Reliance and ByteDance began talks late last month, but nothing has been finalized yet. The report also mentions that TikTok’s business in India was valued at $ 3 billion.
As the report says, the development comes at a time when ByteDance has struggled to retain its employees. A handful of executives have even left the company.
TikTok was banned in India on June 29 and the move came amid ongoing tensions between India and China due to the conflict in Ladakh’s Galway Valley, where 20 Indian soldiers were killed by the Chinese military. The Indian government justified the ban on TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps on security and privacy reasons.
Since the ban was announced, ByteDance has held the position that TikTok is not a security issue and has even promised to cooperate with the government to resolve the issue in question.
In related news, the US government led by Donald Trump also moved against TikTok (and WeChat). But instead of banning the video-sharing service entirely, the government has given the company 45 days before which it will be banned in the country unless ByteDance sells the American business to an American company.
